The frigidarium the "Palais des Thermes" of the ancient Lutetia has been restored and it is here, and in two rooms of the Hotel de Cluny, the exhibition takes place. It addresses the theme of the toilet and bath, cosmetic and body care which took off in antiquity and the Middle Ages. A chemical analysis conducted on cosmetics brings a new dimension to the project .... The bath was an important moment of daily life in antiquity and the exhibition features a wide variety of items: toiletry boxes containing cosmetics, perfume vases, combs, mirrors, valuables, as well as ordinary small tools clean. Sculptures (ancient portraits and medieval statues), paintings on vases and paintings from the fifteenth century complete this panorama of beauty between Antiquity and Middle Ages. The course of the exhibition is chronological. The sections evoke the ancient baths and decor including a series of statues of Aphrodite bathing, inherited a theme of the fourth century and often repeated by the Roman copyists. The rooms devoted to the medieval era, breaking the still prevalent image of a Middle Age Dark, instead showed the variety and sometimes the luxury accessories and rituals of the toilet. Far from being forgotten, the great classical texts on the issue of body care are reproduced in the lavishly decorated manuscripts that can be discovered. Some of them offer great images of medieval baths, like the famous tapestry of life stately bath that closes the exhibition. The exhibition also has a scientific novel. A study conducted by the laboratories of L'Oreal Research and the Centre for Research and Restoration of Museums of France (CNRS-C2RMF) allowed the analysis of 144 samples of products. You will discover objects that contain traces of paint or ointment, as a surprising pyx discovered in 2003 and filled with cream bleach or a funeral vase containing a cosmetic pink. The exhibition bathroom and the mirror - cosmetics and body care from Antiquity to the Middle Ages, held from 20 May to 21 September 2009 at the Musée national du Moyen Age - Thermes et Hôtel de Cluny, 6 place Paul-Painleve, 75005 Paris (map here). Open every day except Tuesday from 9:15 to 5:45 p.m.. Full price: 8,50 € Reduced rate: 6,50 € including the permanent collections.
