Boscia albitrunca, the tree of the pastors or, as they call the English (sheperd's tree), witgat or witgatboom in Afrikaans and xukutsi in Tswana, is a very common tree in the dry areas of southern Africa, which is also called the tree of life, as a support both humans and animals. This is a small tree or medium size ranged from 5 to 7 meters or less, thick and rounded crown. The trunk is smooth and its color ranges from white to gray to yellow (hence the species name: albitrunca "white stem"). The leaves, of a grayish green color, 20 to 50 mm long and 6-25 mm in width, are lanceolate, with rounded apex and short stalk. The flowers are small and very fragrant, form dense clusters on the branches of a yellowish green hue from July to November. They have no petals and are about 3 mm. The fruit, globular, yellow and smooth, is 10 mm in diameter and leads to a seed head. It grows in dry areas of southern Africa in Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa. He is considered one of the important trees for his use of Kalahari. Many animals browse on the tree, including giraffes, oryx, kudu, sheep, goats and cows, so that always appears at the bottom branching. In the case of domestic livestock, must be careful with the amount of leaves they eat, because they give bad taste to meat and milk. Also fed to the larvae of several butterflies. The infusion of the leaves used to treat eye infections in cows. The crushed root can be eaten and used as a coffee substitute. It also serves to make a slightly alcoholic drink and is applied on hemorrhoids. The fruits are used for other diseases and flowers serve as a condiment. The wood used to make kitchen utensils.
