Capucci

Hilarion Capucci (Aleppo, Syria, March 2, 1922) is a retired archbishop of the Order of St. Basil of Aleppo Melkite and peace activist. He was ordained a priest of the Basilian Order of Aleppo on July 20, 1947. On July 30, 1965 he was appointed archbishop, was consecrated months later. During his time in office was a fierce opponent of Israel, siding with the Palestinians. In 1974 he was sentenced by an Israeli court accused of using his diplomatic status to smuggle weapons to the Army for the Liberation of Palestine and sentenced to 12 years in prison. Capucci was one of the prisoners whose release was demanded by the Palestinian hijackers of Air France Flight 139 in 1976. He was released a year later due to the intervention of the Vatican. The governments of Iraq, Libya, Sudan and Syria Capucci honored with postage stamps. An opponent of the Iraq war, Capucci wrote the foreword for the book Neo-Conn!: Just War Principles to Condemnation of War in Iraq, by John Sharpe. In 2009, Capucci was a Lebanese ship bound for Gaza, who was captured by Israeli forces when the ship tried to rape the Israeli naval blockade. In 2010 it was one of the ships carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza and were attacked by the Israeli army. He had previously conducted an interview to Al Jazeera on board the ship.
