With all the negative press about Teflon and metals that are leached from the pots and pans, consumers are on the lookout for kitchen utensils that are easy to clean and do not introduce any health concerns. The silicone, a synthetic rubber made from silicon soldier (a natural element rich in sand and stone) and oxygen, increasingly fills this niche. The material, flexible but strong, which has proved popular in muffin pans, cake molds, spatulas and other utensils, can go from freezer to oven (up to 428 degrees Fahrenheit), is nonstick and stainless steel, and unlike conventional batteries cooking, comes in a range of bright colors and cheerful.. But some wonder if there is a sinister side to the cooking pot made of silicone. Anecdotal reports of silicone oil stains or oozing of the silicone batteries overheated poles appear on the Internet, and reports of odors that persist after repeated washings. Also, the image of the silicone may be forever tainted by problems associated with silica-gel implants for breast, some women with older generations of these grafts experienced capsular contracture, an abnormal immune system response to foreign material. And although theories about the connection of the silica grafting breast cancer were discredited, the damage to the reputation of the silicon remains.. Sad to say, but since use of silicone cookware is fairly new, has not been much research on its safety for use with food. Years ago in 1979 the Department of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determined that the dioxides of silicon, the basic elements in the battery of silicone kitchen could be generally recognized as safe for use even in contexts of food. But the first silicon cooking utensils (spatula) only began to appear in stores until a decade later, the FDA has not conducted any follow-up study to determine whether silicone can leach from cookware and potentially contaminate food. For its part, the health agency of Canada, Health Canada maintains that the silicone does not react with food or drink foods and produce no harmful vapors, and as such can be used at maximum recommended temperatures.. The consumer advocate Debra Lynn Dadd, who avoids the Teflon because of health concerns, is optimistic about silica utensils for cooking, after investigating its potential toxicity. "I tried to find some information on the health effects because of the silicone rubber, but that is not listed in any of the databases that use toxic chemicals," she says, adding that she also sampled material safety data several silicone rubbers manufactured by Dow Corning (which manufactures about 700 variations). "All descriptions I read of silicone rubber describe it as chemically inert and stable, so it is unlikely to react with or leach into food or gas vapors." She adds that the silicone "is not toxic to aquatic organisms or earth, is not a hazardous waste, and while not biodegradable, can be recycled after a lifetime of use.". Therefore, although most of us probably will not have any problems with cooking utensils silica, those who suffer from chemical sensitivities may want to wait until more definitive research is completed. Meanwhile, kitchen utensils, cast iron and anodized aluminum are still the preferred choice for those who are concerned about the leaching of harmful materials in their food cooked.. ..
