Denman

Thomas Denman (November 16, 1874 to June 24, 1954), 3rd Baron Denman, was a British politician of the Liberal Party which was the fifth Governor General of Australia. The Denman family arrived in Sydney in July 1911. They found a Labour government led by Andrew Fisher installed. He got along well with the Labour government, his modesty, his generosity with money from his stepfather made him very popular in the population. But Denman found he had less political influence than his predecessors. As Australia had reached political maturity, the Prime Minister directly corresponded with his British counterpart, bypassing the Governor General and the Minister of Colonies. The appointment of an ambassador ("High Commissioner") of Australia in London declined further its political role. In June 1913 the Labour government was defeated at the surprise by the Liberals of Joseph Cook. But the Labor Party had retained control of the Senate and was determined to put a spoke in the wheels of the new government. Early 1914 a political crisis began to develop. Denman was in poor health - he was allergic to mimosa, the emblematic plant of Australia and his wife suffered from being too far from home, so he resigned his post in May 1914. Back in England, he remained loyal to his party and its leader, he did not hold office and never led a quiet life until his death in 1954.
