Donell Jones grew up in Chicago. He is the son of a gospel singer and it is therefore only logical that he was very influenced by it. As a boy he attended the gangs of South Side of Chicago, he said later: "You see the Gang of friends with beautiful things, beautiful cars, beautiful girls and nice clothes, that's it the Gang. ". Donell has yet managed to leave the gang and the temptation to pursue his passion became his profession, music. In 1994 the compilation "Let's Get It On" by Eddie F means that the first group with his porch on the track "Make You Feel Real Good." Jones's career became a reality when in 1995 he was discovered by Edward Ferrell, who helped Donell Jones signed a contract with Laface Records. Indeed, Donell Jones had made a demo song for this gentleman at a conference of the Black Radio Exclusive in Washington. His first album titled My Heart is released in 1996 and the second album titled Where I Want to Be was released in 1999, with the success of the song U Know What's Up.
