Esteban

The figure of St. Stephen is framed at the beginning of the second century AD, at which time Christianity was considered a sect of Judaism. According to Acts, Stephen was the leader of the seven deacons appointed by the apostles in defense of the Hellenistic Jews, that is, those Diaspora Jews who spoke Greek, despite living in Jerusalem. From this position, Esteban denounce the preferences that the Church gave the Jews Hebrews against the Hellenist Jews, in turn condemned the use of the Temple of Jerusalem as the seat of idolatry contrary to the Law of Moses and Jesus was saying that only call to spiritualize the Temple cult. These ideas will collide with the material interests of the priesthood and the beliefs of the Jewish people, which will end up bothering some synagogues the Pharisees who accuse Stephen before the Sanhedrin of blasphemy against Moses and Yahweh. The assembly is deemed guilty and will be stoned Stephen outside Jerusalem while, according to tradition, this was praying for his executioners, saying, "Lord, do not hold this sin." Participants will meet the future San Pablo, although sources tell us that apparently not involved in the stoning, but merely to look after the clothes of those who did. On the death of Stephen, the group will disperse the Hellenistic Palestine and Antioch, where the sermon will be made even to the pagans. The Martyrdom of St. Stephen will mark the end of Christianity as a sect of Judaism, to separate the Christian religion practiced Jewish worship in Jerusalem. The Hellenistic lay the foundations of Christianity conceived as a universal religion, not exclusively Jewish, a concept which later lead to full expression and San Pablo will be ratified at the Council of Jerusalem.
