Beatriz Gigi Fernandez was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, February 22, 1964. He began playing tennis at age 7, and at 17 became the first player in professional tennis being rented from Puerto Rico. He would later be considered one of the best doubles tennis players. Along with Natasha Zvereva, Fernandez was part of one of the best women's doubles pairs of the sport's history, surpassed only by the duo of Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver in the amount of Grand Slam tournaments. In 1984 he was ranked in the WTA (Women's Tennis Association) and began a friendship with Martina Navratilova. At the end of the decade, Navratilova and Fernandez decided to join together as partners in doubles and for the years 1992, 1993 and 1994 won the Wimbledon doubles championship. On April 1, 1991 was considered the number one doubles player. He won the French Open 5 consecutive years from 1991-1995. In 1992 and 1996 won gold medal at the Olympics representing the U.S. team, since a few years before becoming an American citizen and established residence in the city of Colorado.
