With a style reminiscent of cubism, the Monument of Faith Discoverer (Huelva) was one of the greatest works of the sculptor. The monument is popularly known among the population of Huelva as "Monument to Columbus." Whitney came from a very wealthy American family, was great-granddaughter of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt and eldest daughter of the marriage between Cornelius Vanderbilt II (1843-1899) and Alice Claypool Gwynne (1852-1934). His early years were conducted in accordance with their social status: he spent the summers at the family mansion The Breakers in Newport (Rhode Island), was educated by private tutors and then went to the exclusive Brearley School in New York. At age 21 she married the banker and investor Harry Payne Whitney (1872-1930), who had three children: Flora, Cornelius and Barbara. His artistic vocation early in the century came to learn firsthand the artistic bohemia of Paris. He studied sculpture at the Art Students League of New York and then took classes in Paris with Auguste Rodin. Whitney set up two studies of art in Greenwich Village (New York) and Passy (Paris) and received praise in Europe and the United States for his work. During the First World War, Gertrude Whitney established and funded a military hospital in Neuilly-sur-Seine and made several sculptures commemorating the end of the conflict. 1914 Whitney opened the Whitney Studio Club at number 147 West 4th Street in the Village New York, a gallery for young artists. Thus laying the foundations for the future Whitney Museum (New York), whose foundation in 1931 was decided when the Metropolitan Museum of Art rejected the donation of his collection of modern art. Among his philanthropic work can also mention their financial support to the International Composer's Guild, an organization dedicated to furthering the interpretation of contemporary music in 1934 was part of a court battle with his sister for possession of her niece, Gloria Vanderbilt, 10 years. Gertrude Whitney died of bacterial endocarditis in 1942 and lies beside her husband in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx (New York).
