John Greenleaf Whittier, born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, and died 17décembre1807 in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire, 7septembre1892, was a North American Quaker poet and a renowned advocate of the abolition of Slavery. It belongs to the group known as the Fireside Poets (poets fireside). In time journalist, he worked early in his career for various newspapers in Haverhill and Boston. He was co-editor of the New England Weekly Review, the newspaper spokesman Whig party, in Hartford. Whittier was a Quaker and as an active opponent of slavery in the southern states. His abolitionist ideas expressed in articles and in his poems, for example Ichabod. In his lifetime he was one of the most prominent authors in the United States. Today it is almost forgotten. Only A few of his texts are still used in church songs like Dear Lord and Father of Mankind.
