He studied medicine at Edinburgh University and became assistant surgeon to the British East India Company in India, and chief surgeon in the Madras Regiment. Jerdon starts collection of birds on his arrival in India. He sent his collections to William Jardine (1800-1874) that he identifies them, unfortunately, they arrive safely, but they are being ravaged by insects and Jardine would refuse to receive them for fear of infecting their own collections. Jerdon then decides to conduct his own work and determination issued in 1839-1840, A Catalogue of the Birds of the Indian Peninsula in the journal Madras Journal of Literature and Science. It describes 420 species and double the number of those described by William Henry Sykes (1790-1872). The most important work is The Jerdon's Birds of India (1862-1864) in which he described over 1000 species. He also edited Illustrations of Indian Ornithology (1844), The Game Birds and Wildfowl of India (1864) and Mammals of India (1874). He does not care for the birds but also to plants, ants, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. He is the instigator of the series Fauna of British India.
