The independent perfumer Sandrine Videault living and working in Oceania. She tells us of an exotic and rare flower with a distinctive smell: the Fagraea * or the 'Flower of Tabuholzes. This white flower is for the people of Wallis as important as for Tiare Tahiti. It is in some ways the symbol of Wales and the locals call it the Poua (written phonetically). You use them to manufacture their necklaces. If I did not used to the smell of Manoumalia ** would that I had made a mistake, however much it is rooted in the culture of Wales. It is a flower of the Pacific, which blooms from October to January. The Fagraea grows on a tree that is often found on one of the Loyalty Islands ***, namely Maré (the paradise of Fagraea). The Kanak women from Maré they use a lot and she is very popular in Hawaii. Here, in New Caledonia, we call the tree that flower: the Tabuholz or kerosene tree. She is the flower of Tabubaumes. When I speak of Fagraea, I understand only a few. Flower of Tabubaumes everyone understands immediately. The flower is very rich and their fragrance is between the Tiare, the tuberose, the gardenia and frangipani settle ... I like to call the tuberose of the islands, because their flavor, but also their shape, reminiscent of the tuberose, because it has a trumpet shape. Distillation experiments were indeed made, but without satisfactory results. One must certainly work on his long enfleurage. So I've been working with the nose that means I have reconstructed it.
