The monkey-headed owl monkey or an ape of Hamlyn is diurnal arboreal whose distribution is poorly understood but appears to overlap the equator to the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and possibly Uganda. Very little data are available regarding this case. One study suggests that breeding season is in the Democratic Republic of Congo from May to October. The young are born with fur and facial skin color different from the adult. After a few weeks, the pigmented skin of the face but the characteristic white bar appears at puberty. The hair of youth is green with golden highlights and reminiscent of Talapoin (Miopithecus Talapoin). The species is found in lowland basin Lualaba / Congo to the Ituri forest in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and the Albertine Rift and the Nyungwe Forest in Rwanda. The range extends north of Lindi-Nepoko basin and south to the rainforest where its boundary is not clearly defined. Although the case seems rather subservient to a lowland ecosystem, it is still present in the forests of the mountains babu Albertine. The populations of the eastern highlands are now isolated into islands of fragmented habitat (including Gishwati, Virunga Mountains, forest fragmentation from between the National Park Kahuzi-Biega and Massisi). The monkey seems to Hamlyn remain aloft until 3000 m and its upper limit should not exceed 3200 m. No precise data available to date, but the IUCN has listed the actual cuts in some areas and are continuing.
