Menda

Sakae Menda (jp: ? ? ?) born 4novembre1925, is the first person to have been released from death row in Japan after a second trial. Menda was arrested and charged 13janvier1949 of killing two people on 30décembre1948. He was convicted and wrongly sentenced to death on 23mars1950. The supreme court upheld the conviction on 25décembre1951. Menda maintained he was innocent, and placed six times a request for a new trial. The request was finally granted, and he was retried from 27septembre1979. His alibi, ignored during the first trial, was valid, and he was acquitted on 15juillet1983, after more than thirty years in the corridor of death. He received 90 million yen in compensation from the Japanese government, and offered half that amount to an organization dedicated to abolishing the death penalty. In 2007, he attended a World Congress against the Death Penalty held in Paris. Copyright Text is available under Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike, other conditions may apply.
