Robert Charles Durman Mitchum (born August 6, 1917 - m. July 1, 1997) was a film actor and singer nominated for an Academy Award. Mitchum is remembered for his starring roles in some of the most important film genre known as black, and considered the precursor of the prevalent anti-hero in the movies of the 1950s and 1960s. Mitchum was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut. His mother, Ann (nee Gunderson), a descendant of Norwegian, and his father, James Thomas Mitchum, worked in the shipyards and the railway. [1] A sister Annette, (known as Julie Mitchum) was born in 1913. James Mitchum died in an accident at the railway terminal in Charleston, South Carolina, in February 1919. Robert was then 2 years old. After the death of his father to Ann Mitchum was awarded a government pension and soon realized she was pregnant. He returned with his family in Connecticut and married a former British Army major who helped to care for children. In September 1919 their son, John. When her children were old enough to attend school, Ann found employment as a typesetter. Throughout childhood Mitchum, was known as a prankster, often involved in fights and pranks.
