Molyneux

The problem of Molyneux is a thought experiment relating to empirical philosophy that formulated the Irish scholar and politician William Molyneux in response to an extract of the Essay Concerning Human Understanding John Locke published in French in early 1688 . Exhibited in a letter sent to the English philosopher on July 7 of that year, this issue raises the question of the ability of a man born blind who suddenly have their sight restored to distinguish just by looking at two objects he identified once with the touch only because of their different forms, one for cubic and spherical for the other. Despite the fact that the two correspondents concluded that the former blind man could not distinguish the cube and the sphere that had previously palpated when he was blind, the issue sparked a major debate which mobilized George Berkeley, Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz, Voltaire, Denis Diderot and other great European thinkers of the time and did not stop after the first actual experiment conducted by the surgeon and anatomist William Cheselden a person operated for cataract in 1728. The matter is still under investigation today, not least by the history of philosophy, the problem of Molyneux being the one who drew the most reflection among philosophers of perception [1].
