Nunavut, Canada's newest territory, forms the third largest ocean coastline of the country. The territory's population 30,000 inhabitants, of whom 85% are Inuit. Moreover, its 25collectivités, accessible only by air, covering an area amounting to no less than one quarter of Canadian territory. The ancestors of the Inuit first arrived in eastern Siberia there are over 4000 years. These first inhabitants have shown great ingenuity in adapting to long, dark and exceedingly cold Arctic winters. The chilly climate, permafrost and lack of arable land make farming impossible and restrict traditional local food sources. For food and warmth, the Inuit depended on fish, wild birds and mammals, and it is this state of dependency that has reinforced the links between the Inuit and their environment. The ringed seal was essential to the survival of the Inuit, who used to feed and clothe themselves. Sealing requires considerable patience and Inuit hunters have great respect for the souls of animals that contribute to their well-being. Historically, the seal is central to Inuit culture, participating in his own way to maintain the tradition of sharing, preservation of a valuable body of knowledge on the seal and its ecosystem, and transmission of knowledge how and Inuit values from one generation to another. The traditional Inuit values are at the heart of the basic principles of the seal hunt in Nunavut, the operation has to be sustainable, humane and effective - the whole animal is used for food, making clothing, art and crafts.
