Perry Ellis of Virginia, began his career as a retailer of stores. Then he moved to New York, where he continued working in a very active. After working as design director for a firm known, gave Perry the opportunity to create their own company, which he called the bank. Quickly gained a reputation for fresh ideas, innovative clothing creating sophisticated and stylish. In 1978 his success enabled him to become head of his own collection of women. With its team of talented designers, produced individual clothes and accessories that changed the American view mode. His extraordinary designs were admired by people from upper classes, and the fashion press. By 1980, he felt his design sensibility also would be viewed favorably by the people. He became known for his classic non-traditional, modern, and was lauded for consistently creating innovative clothing. At the beginning of the decade of the '80s, Ellis's health began to deteriorate until the January 2, 1986 died in Miami Beach, Florida (United States). Officially it was said that his death was due to lung cancer, but there were many rumors that Ellis had AIDS.
