Polk

Polk was born on November 2, 1795 in what is now the small town of Pineville in Mecklenburg County (Mecklenburg County in Spanish) in the State of North Carolina. His parents were Samuel and Jane Knox Polk Polk. Polk's family (originally the name was Pollock but was modified over time) was an Irish family from the Ulster Scots ancestry. They came from Europe to Maryland in 1680 and their descendants were gradually moving to North Carolina. In 1815 Polk joined the sophomore class of law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and in 1818 graduated with high honors. After graduating, Polk returned to Nashville, Tennessee, and continued to study under the direction of Felix Grundy, a famous and respected lawyer and politician who many years later to become (among other things) the Attorney General of the United States. Grandy became Polk's mentor in the world of law and by his teaching the future president was able to enter the practice of law through the front door. In 1820 Polk was finally admitted to the Tennessee Bar Association (equivalent to the Bar) and then could become independent and begin to practice law on their own. This was installed in the city of Columbia, Tenn., where he opened his office. Encouraged westward expansion. Oregon claimed, signing with England the treaty of partition in 1846, and managed to annex the state of Texas (1846), but not before engaging in a war with Mexico and its then leader, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, war ended with the defeat of the latter in 1848. He had to admit the Rio Grande (called Rio Grande after the United States) as the border between Mexico and the United States.
