Leionema ambiens is a shrub or small tree in the citrus family. It grows in moist areas of Eastern Australia. The plant is usually found in the ecotone between the rainforest and eucalyptus as a shrub. However, in the Otway National Park in Victoria state Leionema ambiens grows the size of a tree. Names include Palo Satin communes (Satinwood), Boj Satin (Satinbox), and greased pole (Tallowwood). The natural distribution range is from the island state of Tasmania, north to the Chain McPherson on the border of the states of New South Wales and Queensland. Usually grows as a shrub of meters high. However, in the southern part of its range, Leionema ambiens grows to a height of 22 meters high with a diameter of 35 cm. The outer bark is corky, gray and flaky. The trunk is cylindrical. The twigs have small lumps of gray. The tips of the leaves are silvery and scaly. The leaves are alternate on the stem, not toothed, narrowed to a thin tip. The green leaves are a medium tone in the beam, on the underside is silver. The leaves are 8 cm long with thalli of about 3-9 mm long. When viewed with a magnifying glass, the points are yellow oily and translucent. The leaf midrib is raised on the underside, but depressed in the beam. The other veins are not clearly visible. Five-petalled white flowers are in corymbs between September and December. The fruit is a capsule dark brown, 2 to 3 mm long, containing small seeds shiny. The fruit ripens from December to February. Leionema ambiens is easily grown from fresh seed.
