The Songo is a derivative of Afro-Cuban rhythm are drawn from the seventies into the Van Van de Juan Formell. His authorship is generally attributed to the percussionist and drummer José Luis Quintana, alias Changuito. The Songo is a type of music originating in Havana Cubana which combines elements of the Rumba, Cuban Son and other non-Latin contemporary styles like jazz and funk. It was developed by drummers and bands like Changuito and Los Van Van, Ritmo Oriental, Los Latinos, Los Reyes 73, Grupo Irakere and others. Many Latin musicians Songo have described as a kind of soul music, Juan Formell says "It is the synthesis of a personality, a way of being and feeling the music, a summary of cultures and ways of doing a multi-faceted musician original.. " When you touch the Songo, percussion touches the pedal provided a basic pattern called El Tumbao, and then build with your hands. El Tumbao is played with the drum beat in the 4th and in the silence of the 2nd of a beat of four quarters. Songo is a derivative of its montuno developed in the 1970s in Los Van Van, Cuban band led by Juan Formell. Songo is a dynamic rhythm that has many variations, mostly in the play congas and timbales. If it is generally acknowledged paternity of songo to Changuito (José Luis Quintana), he himself explains that this does not happen overnight but as an evolutionary process in the Van Van. Blas Egües first drummer of Van Van, according Changuito played an important role in the genesis of songo.
