Tommy Hilfiger, second in a family of nine children raised in an Irish Catholic family. He completed his secondary education at Elmira Free Academy. Rather than continue his studies, he began working in retail at the age of 18. He was offered positions as assistant designer at Calvin Klein and Perry Ellis but, although it is short of money, he decided to decline these offers. In 1984, he founded the Tommy Hilfiger Corporation (NYSE: THB), which went public in 1992 and developed his signature as a collection of designer menswear. By 2004 the company had 5,400 employees and a turnover of over $ 1.8 billion. Tommy Hilfiger Designer has been elected Man of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 1995. In August 2005, Tommy Hilfiger announced that his company put up for sale, and before the end of the year it was bought by Apax Partners for $ 1.6 billion, or $ 16.80 per share, paid in cash [1].
